Alchermes is an ancient Italian liqueur whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Its name derives from the Arabic "al-qirmiz", referring to its crimson colour. It is spiced and citrus-scented, and is traditionally used to soak cakes and desserts, as well as in cocktails.
